Ettlingen, Germany – February 10, 2026: ScriptRunner the #1 Agentic Microsoft Automation & Orchestration Platform for Microsoft Ecosystems has today announced the publication of its first annual State of Microsoft Automation 2026 report, the most comprehensive assessment to date of how enterprises operate Microsoft‑centric automation in real production environments.
Designed as the first in a yearly series, the report aims to put a finger on the pulse of automation across Microsoft ecosystems. It provides IT leaders with a consistent, data‑driven benchmarking resource to track automation maturity year over year, compare experiences across industries, and identify practical steps to improve governance, visibility, and operational resilience.
Drawing on data representing over 45,000 automated scripts and workflows, the report reveals widespread adoption but persistent operational weaknesses. While 39% of teams have automated most repetitive tasks, over 30% report only partial automation, and 28% still rely heavily on manual processes.
Visibility remains a major obstacle: only 31% actively identify new automation opportunities, with most organizations lacking a clear understanding of what could or should be automated.
The most critical finding centers on governance. Only 28% of respondents enforce full governance policies, while over half of participants admitted they only apply partial controls. In total, 3 out of 4 teams fail to enforce full governance, creating gaps in identity control, auditing, compliance, and delegated execution. These gaps reduce trust in automation during incidents, increase manual intervention, and heighten operational risk.
“This inaugural report shows that automation is everywhere, but consistent, safe automation is not,” said Frank Kresse, Founder & CEO at ScriptRunner. “IT leaders are telling us the same story: fragmented tools, unclear ownership, and missing execution controls keep automation from delivering its full value. With this yearly report, our goal is to help enterprises benchmark their automation maturity and take concrete steps toward fully governed, resilient automation at scale.”
The report also highlights widespread tool silos: less than 20% of organizations achieve full integration across ITSM, monitoring, and infrastructure systems, while a whopping 4 out of 5 teams remain stuck in partially integrated or siloed environments. Self‑service adoption remains low, with less than half reporting underused portals and 27% still routing most issues through the service desk.
