Interview with the General Manager of ScriptRunner Software
Frank Kresse is the inventor of ScriptRunner. As General Manager, he tells us in an interview why the former division of AppSphere AG now operates as an independent subsidiary.
Why does ScriptRunner, as an independent business unit of AppSphere AG, now operate as a separate subsidiary?

What motivated you to continue the buisness in a subsidiary?
We started very early with considerations on how to improve the increasingly complex IT operations and relieve the administrators. We shared ideas and collected feedback with AppSphere AG customers at a very early stage.
The subsequent development of the product ScriptRunner and the business unit itself showed us that we were right with this intention and the procedure. In the meantime, ScriptRunner has become an extensive platform for delegation and automation with PowerShell, which is used by more and more customers, also internationally.
The strong growth since 2017 has increasingly focused all our activities on the immediate target group of IT administrators and the service desk, who perceive us as a software vendor. Of course, this was accompanied by extended requirements for our business activities and the functions of a company. As a software manufacturer, we want to continue along this path. The spin-off into a subsidiary is therefore the consistent end point of a development as an internal start-up at AppSphere. We are now continuing our successful development as an independent company.

Do I have to rewrite my licenses?
All licenses used by our customers retain their validity and functionality. The contractual obligations entered into by AppSphere regarding support, further development, maintenance and updates have also been automatically transferred to ScriptRunner Software GmbH. All our customers continue to receive these services. The contracts concluded shall retain their full validity. Contract extensions, expansions and new contracts are then concluded directly with the company.

What does this mean for me as a customer?
Our customers love our product and appreciate our competence and our approachable approach. In this respect, this is an incentive for us to continue working on it in the future. This does not change the operating side.
From a legal point of view, we have designed the spin-off in such a way that ScriptRunner Software GmbH is the full legal successor for all our customers and suppliers. All contracts were transferred to the subsidiary with legal effect in the course of the spin-off in accordance with the UmwG. For our customers and suppliers, only the technical specifications for the contractual relationship will change. For the sake of clarity, the new information is summarised below.

What chances do you see in the new situation?
Very big for both sides. We and AppSphere AG can each concentrate fully on the requirements of our own business model. This also creates more benefits for our customers, because both the statements and our product and services can be better tailored to their expectations. At the same time, both companies can optimize their internal processes much more easily. As a result, both companies will be more successful.

Who can I contact with my questions or support tickets now?
As a result of the seamless transition as legal successor, all employees of the division have also transferred to the subsidiary. Therefore, you can continue to contact us as before, no matter whether support inquiries or sales information. Due to the early conversion to independent Internet domains, all website URLs and e-mail addresses retain their full functionality.

What are your future plans?
I would like to summarise this in three important keywords: Growth, internationalisation, further development.
We would like to continue our above-average growth, which we have seen continuously since 2017 to the present day. Above average for us means about 70 percent per year. This growth shows, on the one hand, that ScriptRunner meets the needs and expectations of the companies and, on the other hand, that we must continue to improve. This also includes the targeted expansion of personnel and organisation in all teams.
ScriptRunner is a product that can be marketed internationally without any fundamental changes. Since the beginning of this year, we have been driving this development forward in our core markets. For us, a core market is defined as an IT market with significant use of PowerShell in IT operations.
The further development of the platform is determined by the requirements of the technology, such as PowerShell Core or 7, or services such as Office365 PowerApps/Flow, teams, etc., as well as our customers in terms of functionality and deployment scenarios. All these influences have a high dynamic inherent in them, which in turn is driven by the digitization of all value-added areas. IT operations are no exception.
We are convinced that automation in IT operations, regardless of whether the IT resources are operated internally or externally in the cloud, will be a long-running issue over the next decade and beyond.
